Connected to via the internet, the www or World Wide Web is basically a system of html web pages which are made up off images, text, videos and various types of multimedia. These pages can be navigated between using hyperlinks.
Email or Electronic Mail is self explanatory, a method of sending mail and files via the internet using file transfer protocols to another recipient by using electronic communication on a computer.
A newsgroup or discussion group is a storage place in which a log of messages from many different people in different locations can be posted. As with discussion forums these posts can be read and replied to by others. To read these newsgroups, software like Microsoft Outlook is usually required.
Social networking is an online community or website on which people can interact with other people or friends who may have the similar interests and hobbies. Users can contact one another by on-site email and instant messaging.
CD-ROM (Compact Disc, read-only-memory) is a form of Compact disc which allows data of many types to be written onto and read from it. They can be used on any CD player or recorder to play music files or retrieve the contained data. The cd works similar to a vinyl record with a spiral groove but within these grooves are a series of small and long bumps, it’s on the longer bumps that the data is written.

A USB flash drive is a small removable file storage device which connects to a computer by the USB2.0 port. Files can be written to and deleted from the flash drive and as it is very small can be transported around in a pocket or on a keyring making it very useful for presentations etc.. Flash drives are much more economical than old floppy discs and even cd-roms. Unlike the CD or floppy disc the flash drive contains a small printed circuit board, this is protected by a plastic case and makes it very robust for carrying around.
